On September 11, 2001 we lost a dearly
loved family member and the world lost an irreplaceable human
being.
John was born September 17, 1968, the sixth of seven children
to Mary Louise and Philip Murray. He was an honor student
throughout his school years and displayed his leadership abilities
as an ocean lifeguard in Long Island, New York. Following
his graduation from Boston College in 1990, John began a career
as a broker in the financial community of New York City. He
enjoyed considerable success, spending the last 7 years of
his career as a Partner and Director of Cantor Fitzgerald.
In June of 1999, John married Rory Owens. After spending
the year 2000 in London working for Cantor Fitzgerald International,
John and Rory returned home to start a family. John was never
more fulfilled then in April 2001 when his only child, Alyson
Rose, was born.
In 1997, John founded and launched Putt for Progress to raise
money and awareness to benefit the Thomas Jefferson University
Scleroderma Center in their efforts to find a cure for the
relatively unknown disease of Scleroderma. John's sister,
Cathy, was diagnosed with the disease when she was 31. Despite
the average life expectancy for patients affected by the disease
to be 10 years, Cathy is surviving and doing well today. With
the help of his family, John succeeded in raising nearly $200,000
for the Scleroderma Center.
In honor of John's memory and out of respect for what he
set out to accomplish back in 1997, the John J. Murray Foundation
was established in 2002 to continue to support these efforts
and others. We are proud to continue the Putt for Progress
~ appropriately renamed Jack's Putt for Progress. In addition
to raising funds to benefit Thomas Jefferson's Scleroderma
Center, the John J. Murray Foundation also funds a scholarship
program for students interested in attending John's high school,
Salesianum based in Wilmington, Delaware. It is also our hope
that over time the Foundation may be able to assist additional
causes that will provide a fuller life for others and allow
John's spirit to live on in all of us.
We hope that you can join us for future events and remember
John's passion for life, his kindness and generosity, and
his love for the game of golf. John was a wonderful son, a
loving and devoted husband, father, brother and friend. We
miss him greatly but will carry on in his name and in his
memory.
